Dangerous roads drag down house prices

Homeowners with property situated on dangerous roads could be losing out on thousands of pounds on their property value compared with those with houses on safer roads, according to a new survey.

Homeowners with property situated on dangerous roads could be losing out on thousands of pounds on their property value compared with those with houses on safer roads, according to a new survey.

Around 97 per cent of respondents in a poll of members of the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) said they thought that an unsafe road would bring down the value of a property.

Being situated on a dangerous road can bring down property value by up to £10,000, according to 35 per cent of the respondents.

"Calls upon the government and local authorities to endorse specially-designed 'safety zones' to help drivers remember their responsibilities in residential areas will make these roads less hazardous," said Peter Bolton King, chief executive of the NAEA, to website AboutProperty.

"Safety is clearly at the forefront of residents' minds and this is reflected by the impact on house prices."

The survey coincides with Road Safety Week which is running between November 7th and 11th.
