Terraced housing increasingly popular

Terraced housing is becoming more popular, according to new research.

Terraced housing is becoming more popular, according to new research.

During 2005, Norwich and Peterborough Building Society (N&P) saw an increase of nearly a two per cent in the number of loans taken out on terraced homes.

N&P also reported that there was a 2.5 per cent fall in mortgages for detached properties during the same period.

As a result of the increase in mortgages for terraced properties, Paul Rippon, head of banking and mortgage operations at N&P, states that the housing made "a comeback" during last year, adding that "the small terraced house is good value for money".

He said that this type of housing is sustaining its popularity as N&P mortgages on terraced homes also increased in 2004, as it is also "relatively affordable".

However, although it may be becoming more popular, terraced housing did not see the largest proportion of N&P mortgage lending in 2005, accounting for just over 26 per cent of the building society's total mortgage business.

N&P states that mortgages on detached properties represented around 35 per cent of its total lending and semi-detached 32 per cent.
