Landlords 'expect rents to rise'

Almost nine in every ten landlords expect rental income to either remain static or to rise in 2006, according to a new report by Bradford & Bingley.

Almost nine in every ten landlords expect rental income to either remain static or to rise in 2006, according to a new report by Bradford & Bingley.

In a survey of more than 3,000 landlords, the buy-to-let mortgage lender also found that 86 per cent of people who let property will either maintain or increase their current portfolio.

Andrew Moss, buy-to-let product manager at Bradford & Bingley's specialist lending arm, Mortgage Express, said: "This comprehensive study demonstrates the high level of confidence in the buy-to-let market at the start of 2006 with over half the landlords surveyed viewing investment in bricks and mortar as a good way of preparing for their retirement."

Other information contained within the survey includes that terraced housing was landlords' favourite type of property and that almost half of those surveyed (49 per cent) earn over £15,000 from their portfolio.

A separate survey published earlier this month by Standard Life Bank revealed that more than ten per cent of buy-to-let landlords earn over £1,000 each month from renting properties.
