Neighbours will prove useful this Christmas

Neighbours, particularly women aged over 50, can provide peace of mind to homeowners on holiday this Christmas by watching over their property, according to new research.

Legal & General stated yesterday that 97 per cent of people would be happy to keep an eye on a neighbours' property during the festive period. However, it also found that some neighbours may be more useful than others.

Those aged over 50 were found to be the group most likely to check the exterior of a home for signs of break-in. Women of this age were the group most prepared to look after their neighbours' post and close the curtains.

Legal & General also found that 46 per cent of people would "go the extra mile" and buy fresh milk and other necessities to meet them on their return.

Garry Skelton, marketing director at Legal & General, said: "Contrary to popular belief we are not a nation of 'nosy neighbours'.

"It may actually be quite reassuring that at this time of year the curtains may be twitched back to watch your house."

Mr Skelton added that Christmas is a time of year when people's homes could be targeted by burglars due to the presents being kept in them.
